This renovation in Boothbay Maine radically transformed the property and residence. The property includes eastern views to the bustling Damariscotta River from a dramatic rocky cliff coastline. The existing residence offered an opportunity to be close to dear friends, but fell short of the homeowners’ needs and wishes. It required a thorough re-vamp to emphasize views of the water’s edge, appropriately scale spaces for two yet grow for entertaining guests, and a re-naturalization of the landscape to bring the outside in.

Through collaborative efforts, it was decided to demolish an existing compromised split-level bedroom wing. A heavy timber screen porch was built in its place with a covered connection to the dining room for ease of entertaining. The Kitchen, Dining and Living Room spaces were rebuilt from the foundation up allowing for new substantial window and doors systems. The guest suites were additionally re-housed in the existing garage bays to make the most of the existing footprint.

From early on, the Landscape team Richardson Associates closely collaborated with the design team in order to best facilitate connections to the landscape. The existent suburban manicured grass was replaced with native plantings that continued up to the building's edge to create a dramatic interior experience. The residence now exists with the landscape in a way that feels natural yet refined.

Here, a holistic approach to reconsidering a coastal Maine home resulted in thoughtful spaces that effortlessly link person, place, and nature.
