A bold home perched on a ledge-lined cliff on a small island off the coast of Maine was just the breakout project JCA hoped for. The client's vision was a remote sanctuary reminiscent of a James Bond villain's lair—an escape that celebrates raw materials and possesses an architectural edge. The tectonics and limitations of an island build resulted in a home minimal in scale on the approach, scribed to the cliff side, with dramatically scaled interior spaces facing the ocean view. The restraint in the interior acknowledges the dramatic views to multiple neighboring islands. The many fireplaces are extravagantly scaled to awe. The resulting lair is a remote retreat for our British client and his Maine based family.
